NUMBER AND OPERATIONS
Students will use the complex number system.
MM2N1. Students will represent and operate with complex numbers.
a. Write square roots of negative numbers in imaginary form.
b. Write complex numbers in the form a + bi.
c. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide complex numbers.
d. Simplify expressions involving complex numbers.
To add (or subtract) two complex numbers, add (or subtract) their real parts and their imaginary parts separately.
Sum of complex numbers:
(a+bi)+(c+di)=(a+c)+(b+d)i
difference of complex numbers:
(a+bi)-(c+di)=(a-c)+(b-d)i
Ex: (7-i)+(5+3i)= (7+5)+(-1+3)i
= 12+2i
Hint: -i=-1 when adding
